How to use the Velocitek Shift

The Velocitek Shift is a magnetic based compass that excels in offering you an intuitive, easy way to visually see headers and lifts.  Whether you’re the owner or the crew, knowing how to operate your on-board compass is a must, but we’re here to help.

The Shift is specifically designed to indicate whether you are headed or lifted relative to a pre-set Mean Wind Direction.

Although it requires a little more work up front it reduces the amount of work (and math) you’ll actually need to do during the race.

Here’s Matt to show you how to set your mean heading and use the start function:

The Shift contains a gyroscope, accelerometer and magnetometer making it arguably the most accurate compass we offer.   It is a magnetic based compass unlike the SpeedPuck and ProStart which are GPS based.  It also boats a LED backlight and user-replaceable battery further distinguishing it from some of their competitors. Like all Velocitek products it is elegantly simple and easy to use.

Drysuit Maintenance: Seals

Spring sailing is just around the corner--don't let it catch you with your seals down! Seals are hands-down, THE most important part of your drysuit; they keep you dry. Sounds simple, but without the proper care and maintenance, you could very easily find yourself with a leaky suit.

McNett's Seal Saver is a great way to keep your rubber seals in top working order. Just like moisturizing your hands, Seal Saver works to moisturize the rubber and synthetic materials in its silicon based structure. For just a few minutes of application per season, you can save yourself both headache and cost of repairing the seals.

We’re going to show you how to do it here:

Drysuit Maintenance: Zipper Care

With frostbite sailing in full swing, you know the most important piece of gear you have is your drysuit.  Keeping your drysuit properly maintained is a must to keep it performing.

First up, the zipper.  Have you been wondering why the zipper has become so hard to use? Well, over time, zippers dry out and get stiff. Lucky for you we have a solution. McNett's Zip Tech is a high performance lubricant that both protects the zipper and enhances performance.

It's a breeze to use and make a world of difference and we’re here to make it even easier.

Watch the video below to see it in action:

Warm Sailing Hats

As a performance sailor, you probably already know that proper headgear is extremely important when conditions are chilly. At APS, we have a full selection of warm hats to keep you on the water all year long.

If you’re looking for simple hat that will keep you warm, you’ll want a classic knit hat, generally referred to as a “beanie”. We have a good variety of beanies at APS because they are great for both on the water and off.
Hats like the Zhik Sailing Beanie are minimalist yet fuzzy and functional with a fleece lining and an array of fun colors.  If that doesn't quite cut it the Musto Windstopper Knit Hat pulls out all the stops when it comes to warmth and wind blocking with Gore-Tex Windstopper construction.

If you’re looking for a hat to wear in the cold rain or snow, you’ll want a waterproof one. Good thing we have plenty! One option is the Gill Helmsman Hat, that is simple but does the trick and packs in every feature you need to stay warm and dry.

If you’re more the sombrero type (Arrrrrrrrrrrrrriba!), you’ll want the Outdoor Research Snoqualmie Sombrero. You can’t beat this totally weatherproof option with a larger brim to keep off that passing shower (rain or snow).

To stay comfortable on the water year-round, see our entire selection of warm hats and accessories here.
