Unfortunately over time the rubber of some sailing shoe soles will start to get harder. How long it takes varies on use. Taking care to only wear your shoes on the boat and not on shore & rinsing w/ fresh water after every use can go a long way to helping them keep their stickiness. That said, one of the tricks we’ve used to get our shoes back into shape when the rubber gets hard is to scuff them up on a real aggressive concrete sidewalk. Both Mackinaw races now require a teather with a connector designed to release under load. Also required is a knife that can be opened with one hand. I'd prefer to try the snap shackle before finding and opening a knife while tea bagging along the side of the boat.

I have realized there are a lot of other places to get good sailing gear. Now, maybe the gear isn't marketed under sailing or yachting and not carrying the logos -- and I will admit I have allegiance to APSLTD. However, great gear, especially for ocean racing in cold conditions can be found at places that cater to other water sports, or extreme sports for that matter.

My final at bat for waterproof gloves was at West Marine. The info tags stated the gloves were waterproof, windproof... yada yada. Figuring the gloves were manufactured by Henri Lloyd or Musto, as is typically the case with West Marine's gear, I went for them. These gloves failed in less than 20 minutes at sea in rainy conditions, as did their competition as listed in this review.

The solution:

NRS Waterproof gloves made for kayaking in low temperatures. Done... and done. Got them for around $38 out the door at REI.

I have used these chairs almost constantly for almost a year and I'm very impressed - they definitely get my recommendation.
2 suggestions:

1. The pockets can capsize if they are lightly loaded and it is very windy. This is resolved by putting a small stitch where the front and back hems of the pocket(s) pass the bottom edge of the chair - this holds the pocket down enough that it can't fully overturn. This should be done at the factory. Had a few near yard sales of small screws, tools, etc.

2. Lighter (gray) colored pockets would make it easier to see contents.

Otherwise, great product!

Thanks for all these suggestions - I have a son about to go off delivering yachts for a year or more and there are some very sensible suggestions here both for advice and for gifts!
My advice to you all though is to make sure you choose natural sunscreens, preferably without any toxic chemicals!
